I celebrate this holiday as a reminder that I am not alone in this world and that there is hope at the end of the longest, darkest tunnels.
As I scan up to drink in the rest of the splendor that was this unusually elegant outfit for a Saturday at an African hair braiding salon, I take mental note of each pointed piece. Navy pleated skirt, navy and marigold paisley print blouse, extraordinary naturally long red nails, snow white full beard, deep brown hair with a circular revelation of a pale scalp.
"But just like physical exercise is not always easy, regularly fighting for my mental wellness stretches my emotional and spiritual muscles. I have to use techniques and methods that force me to deal with my emotions in the moment when I am tempted to avoid, feed, or pacify them. Sometimes that is really hard but I have seen the fruit of my labor and it is good."
"...you have to be willing to sacrifice and acquiesce, or challenge and debate — all with love, kindness, and authenticity — to hold onto those friendships with everything you have. Or let them go. But never allow bitterness to make its home in your heart and never stop fighting for the ones you love."
